In February 2008, 43 women took part in the first ‘back to netball’ session. Thinking that only a few may want to continue and we’d direct them onto local clubs, we were amazed when over half of the group wanted to carry on playing. We’d also received further demand for back to netball courses, so in May and September 2008 we welcomed 2 additional groups of over 40 women.
The courses proved so popular, we have subsequently run them every year since, and, with only word of mouth advertising, have coached in excess of 200 ladies through the back to netball scheme. We now have over 100 affiliated members currently playing at our club on a regular basis.
Mel Mansfield, Head Coach, has been coaching Priory Netball Club since 2008, and her coaching philosophy for all those she coaches is for them to be the best that they can be, whilst having fun and making friends!
Mel was an England Player from 1993-1998. She played for the Middlesex County Netball Squad for 10 years, plus Academy and Oakwood Netball clubs when in the 1st Division of the National league. Mel’s passion for coaching came about when she had her first child over 12 years ago and “wanted to give something back” to the game. Mel has coached all sorts of ages, from 6 to 60 year olds and has been involved in elite coaching since 2009 when the Netball Superleague was created. Mel was assistant coach to Surrey Storm NSL for 4 seasons, initially under the guidance of her ex England coach, Mary Beardwood and then Tamsin Greenway, England International. This season, Mel has moved away from the Surrey commute to have some family time and do some technical coaching for the local franchise, the Hertfordshire Mavericks. Mel completed her UKCC level 3 coaching award in 2013.
